There's an element of fiddling to fight with the army you have, and you DO get certain basic unlocks that ensure you're still capable of fighting at a basic level (i.e. On a multiplayer run with friends we unlocked cruise missiles early on, before we could replenish IR missiles so we've been going absolutely insane with cruise missile strikes to a degree that probably wouldn't have happened if we had IR missiles. On my end I actually do like the random nature of the unlocks somewhat, as they end up shaping your strategy based on what you have available instead of always going for what's best/you're most comfortable with. I know a guy who tried playing custom maps with fewer islands - you end up unlocking like five or more blueprints per island. Haven’t tested myself but I would assume you would just unlock more blueprints per island Originally posted by TinManNFO:I haven't seen this mentioned specifically so far (though it may be just because there's a flood of new discussion topics all the time because the game just came out), but are all blueprints always somewhere on a given world map? For example, if you choose a starting custom map size of 20 total islands, will each island have a bunch of blueprints to compensate, or will you just be hosed if none of the 20 blueprints (one per island) have things you need? At the very least each island should drop a unique blueprint, and if there aren't enough islands then a chance to get 2 or more blueprints from the island would be fair, with the harder islands having a larger chance to drop more than one. I'm betting in my current game I won't see every item since there just aren't enough islands of each type needed. That said, I agree with the post above that an island shouldn't unlock what you already have unlocked, just re-roll for another blueprint of the same category. Since for the custom map you can adjust what blueprints you start with I don't see it as a huge issue. I'm having to use mostly bombs, TVGM and 30mm because that's all I can manufacture, but I probably would have never tried sinking a boat with a TVGM or doing a high speed manual bombing run with a manta so I could drop all 4 bombs on an AA turret in one run. I like that the random nature of unlocks really steps up the difficulty and encourages experimenting, since you're forced to adjust your tactics depending on what you have on hand.
